Linda Fairstein, former chief of Sex Crimes Unit, for the district attorney’s office in Manhattan, from 1976 until 2002, is currently under fire for leading a witch hunt against five teenage boys, even though the physical evidence didn’t support her theory. The 1989 case is known as, “The Central Park Jogger Case.” The Hashtag #CancelLindaFairstein calls for publishers and booksellers to stop supporting Fairstein, who has become a novelist. 33,928 have signed the petition, as the current goal is currently 35,000  – The petition:  https://www.change.org/p/amazon-all-other-book-retailers-linda-fairstein-central-park-five-book-removal?signed=true

“When They See Us,” a newly released Netflix miniseries, produced by academy award nominee Ava DuVernay, highlights how “five teens from Harlem become trapped in a nightmare, when they’re falsely accused of a brutal attack in Central Park.” Those five teens, now adults, are Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise. Ava’s uses the miniseries to depict the inhumane process used by Fairstein and her team, as they coerced false confessions from four of the five teens, during the case.

As reported, “All five convictions were overturned in 2002 when Matias Reyes, a convicted serial rapist in New York, confessed to the rape. DNA evidence confirmed his confession. The city settled with “The Central Park Five” in 2014, awarding the men $41 million.

Despite all the facts now known in the case, Fairstein, currently an international bestseller, is reported to continually accuse the five wrongfully convicted men, even after Reyes’ 2002 confession.

“I think Reyes ran with that pack of kids. He stayed longer when the others moved on. He completed the assault,” Fairstein told “The New Yorker” in 2002. Fairstein also is on the record as stating,

“The confessions were not coerced,” she wrote in the New York Law Journal, as recent as 2018.

“The questioning was respectful, dignified, carried out, according to the letter of the law, and with sensitivity to the young age of the men.”

Ava DuVarney is reported to have told The Daily Beast that she approached Fairstein to share her side of the story for the film

“I don’t know if I’ve told anyone this, but she tried to negotiate conditions for her to speak with me, including approvals over the script and some other things. So you know what my answer was to that, and we didn’t talk.”

A Ryan Swink led petition on change.org petition calls for publishers and booksellers to stop the production and sales of Fairstein’s novels. The petition reads:

“Linda Fairstein achieved her fame & fortune through her wild imagination & at the expense of five INNOCENT children’s pain… let’s start off with why this petition was started , Linda Fairstein led a witch hunt against five teenage boys even though the physical evidence didn’t support her theory she raged on with one goal in mind & that was to get a conviction at any expense even the lives of teenage boys… she led the hunt that fundamentally changed these men’s lives forever & unfairly tarnished their reputation , you could almost say she hunted these boys for their lives & after securing the conviction she wanted & the spotlight being off the case Linda decided to do what she does best tell story’s , she became a fictional true crime writer & even after the exoneration of the five children she hunted & full well knowing she took a part in it well what does she do ?? Represents Harvey Weinstein ( media mogul , serial sexual assault perpetrator ) so the woman preaching justice for sexual assault survivors is representing the perpetrators now… these circumstances are NOT a coincidence no this vile evil woman has a long history of using her imagination & does so regardless of the pain & suffering is causes others & I believe it to be fact that she’s led this whole entire crusade out of the aspiration of financial gain knowing the media coverage the case would generate & knowing if she secured a conviction regardless of the evidence her book career on true crime ( her career field ) would flourish… I believe her actions were led by her greed & desire to relevant maybe even famous & I believe these character flaws of hers led her to KNOWINGLY & WRONGFULLY hunt these boys into a conviction & because of her shameful past I am starting a petition to ask ALL retailers & book publishers to stop selling Linda Fairstein books or any product that has ties to her …”
